The B&B "Le Piccole Grotte" is situated in the most charateristic part of
Scilla: the ancient and exclusive sea village of Chianalea, standing just
on the sea.
It is characterized by little lanes, narrow steps and small
houses on the rocks, lapped by the sea water, which somitimes reaches the front
door.
The seaguls stand on the rocks, facing the small village of Chianalea, and fly
from the sea to the fishing boats, looking for some food, often fish leftovers
lying along the shore
20m far from "Le Piccole Grotte", there is the biggest "scaru" of Chianalea
where all the fishing activities of the small village takes place and where,
every day, the catch of fish is sold.

Chianalea is accessible from the nearby harbour of Scilla, beyond which cars
can't run; on foot, you have to walk 300m to reach our B&B.
It is very pleasant and exciting to take a walk beacause you have the
possibility of diving into a bygone reality. You can often meet families of
fishermen who, doing their daily work, haul the fishnets and repair the
fishpots.
This place has insired the Greek mythology :in fact, Scilla is the name
of the beatiful nymph, loved by the sea god Glauco and turned by Circe into a
monster,in a fit of jealousy.
The cliff of Scilla overlooks the Strait of Messina, just in front of the
mythical whirppol of Carybdis, and dominates the two bays of Marina Grande and
Chianalea.

This impressive rocky spur, for its strategic position, has been since the V
century B.C. The castle is still well-preserved and it represents a destination
for many visitors. First it was under the rule of the Normans and then of the
Swabians, the Angevins and the Aragonese. There, in 1860, Giuseppe Garibaldi put
on the stronghold of the castle the Italian tricolour, after he landed in Scilla
with his Thousand.

Behind, there is the nearby Gambarie d'Aspromonte (1200m above sea level):
it could be reached by car or by coach in 30 minutes and offers the possibility
of alternating the sea holiday with an intense immersion in the vigorous green
of the mountains of Aspromonte.
